Narrative Theories

This is a presentation that shows the Narrative theories we have used in our music video:

Evidence of communicating with each other

A lot of the time throughout this project we have communicated by talking to each other around school and in lesson. However we have also Facebook messaged each other a few times. Mainly to make filming arrangements.

This is part of a Facebook conversation me and Celine had regarding making arrangements for filming the higher class/lower class street scenes in February (we didn't use this street in the end, and we also ended up using different people due to others being unavailable.)

Updated Location Report

We weren't originally going to film here. We originally planned to film on Sundridge Drive but given the short amount of time we decided to use somewhere that was slightly closer.

Magazine Advert Plan

This is our plan of how we want our magazine advert to look. We have started putting it together and this is how it will look like almost once it is done. All the writing on the image is to show where we are going to put everything. For example, the 'Title' is saying that is where we are going to write 'Royals'. Another example is the word 'Glow' which we have written four times to indicate we want a white glow coming from the CD cover to separate the cover from the actual advert making it stand out.

Digipack First Draft

This is our first draft for the front of our digipack. To create this we took a screenshot from a scene in our music video. We used fonts Britannic Bold and Old English Text MT for the titles on this digipack. We used a grey background just like in the original cover and a photo of Celine as she is posing as Lorde for our music video.
For our final digipack we will take a new photo of Celine as this photo is rather out of focus. We may have the same pose but it is likely we will create the same pose as Lorde for her cover. We will now start to work on the back cover for our digipack and a CD design.

Update 03/03/2016

We had planned to film our last scene on Sunday the 28th of February which would have taken no longer than half hour but unfortunately things did not go to plan as the people we wanted to film with had become unavailable. We then rearranged to film on Tuesday the 1st of March but the weather did not allow us to get the shots we wanted. We have now decided to now film on Monday or Tuesday next week (the 7th or the 8th of March). We can then finish our final piece and start putting together our evaluations. We have already started research but there is only so much we can do prior to finishing our film. Once we have our final rough cut we will get some audience feedback encase we need to change anything and we will then get another final audience feedback once we have put together our final piece.

Update 26/02/2016

Today we had a meeting discussing what we had left to film and when we was going to do it. We agreed that we would do a lot of filming over the weekend. Over the weekend we will be filming pieces such as higher class and lower class walking towards each other which is our most important shot of our music video. We also need a few more shots of higher class people going about their everyday lives. We also need a few more lower class shots such as them hanging out and 'fist pumping'.

Update 25/02/2016

We still need to film the important shots that show the differences between higher and lower class. We hope to do the majority of these shots this weekend.
Once we have as much footage as we can get we need to edit it all so that the shots change on each beat.
The drawings on the storyboard have been completed. Tomorrow we will scan the storyboard into the computer and then upload it onto this blog.

Screenshot of Tweet to Lorde

We attempted to contact Lorde via social media to ask permission to use her song 'Royals' for our music video. Celine used her Twitter account to tweet Lorde, asking for her permission.
Here is the screenshot:

Test Shot 1

The end shot is of the piece of paper being thrown into a bin. This is our first test shot for that scene. We used a bottle as an example.

Stop Motion Rough Cut

These photos will make the beginning of our music video as we will be using stop motion to create our opening. This is our first go at doing this. We may have to re-do it if we feel it doesn't look right once we have done our rough cut.

Starting our filming

Yesterday (14th January) we started our filming.
We found a few scenes at the start and the end that we knew we could film during school time.
We asked the music department at Greenacre if we could use one of their recording studios/music rooms to film because we wanted the scenes to be set in a music environment.
They allowed us into one of the rooms.
We then started to take pictures of paper being scrunched up bit by bit for our stop motion at the end and at the beginning (although for the beginning the pictures will be reversed making it look like the scrunched up paper is being unraveled).
We also filmed a scene for the end, when Lewis takes the paper and throws it in the bin.
Using Corel Video Studio Pro X3 I put the photo shots together to create the stop motion. I then put the filming of Lewis at the end.
I have separated the end and beginning by leaving a black background for a few seconds in between.
It is a work in progress, and this is obviously our first draft. After watching it as group, we decided that we need more photos to make it more like a film, because at the moment it sort of jumps to each picture and it doesn't really look very professional or like a film. We can improve on that though.

Here is our first draft of our stop motion technique for our music video:

Filming Timetable - Update 08/01/2016

Today me and Lewis have started our filming timetable. We could only do a little bit as Celine is ill today and we really need her because she is the main person in the music video meaning we need her in many of the scenes and for the most of the filming. We are hoping she is back next week so we can finish this off, and start a bit of filming!
On the 14th and 15th of January (next week) we plan to complete the filming timetable, storyboard (just need to draw pictures - all the information is there) and start filming shots 1,2,44 and 24 from our storyboard. Because they can be done at school, and we really want to start filming as soon as possible!

Location report

Places where we are going to film:

  • Katie's house
  • School - Greenacre Academy
  • Sundridge Drive
  • Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre (need to ask permission)
  • Princes Avenue, filming on top of bridge outside Morrison's, onto road for time-lapse of cars.
  • Chatham Train Station (most shots already taken)

Ideas for our Magazine Advert and Digipak

For our digipak we are thinking of doing a simple yet effective design.

We are going to take a photo of Celine in front of a dark background, making her stand out a bit.

We are then going to edit it on Photoshop, adding some effects that are simple, but also, again, effective. This can be on the inside of the digipak (maybe the booklet).

The front cover can be black with white text saying 'Royals'.

The CD can also be Black with 'Royals' text on it. This is very similar to what Lorde has done herself.

For our advert we are thinking of maybe using a screenshot of the time-lapse taken of the cars from our music video.

Blog Update - 11/12/2015

Our first draft of our storyboard is now completed after two weeks of having group meetings. while creating out story board, we realised that some things needed to be changed as we either came up with better ideas or we found that certain shots were repetitive. We made these changes on the storyboard and so we will be updating our script to match our story board as a second draft. We will then soon be making a final draft of both to upload onto the blog before filming.
As well as this, we have decided to start filming little bits during the Christmas holidays so we don't have as much to deal with when we actually get to the filming stage. Location research will also be carried out in so we know where we can film.

Location Research

We have been deciding on locations to shoot at whilst doing our storyboard.
These are our locations that we have discussed:

  • for the time lapse of cars - we need a road (maybe on bridge outside Morrisons?)

we might shoot footage from this bridge, of cars on the road. (street map image)

  • In a bedroom (for close-up of Celine singing against plain (white-ish) wall.) - Katie's room?

  • a not-so-busy street for shots of lower and sometimes higher class walking.

  • Hotel room (TV Static shot)

  • At a bus stop (lower class getting on a bus)

this is a bus stop we might use (street map image)

  • Hempstead Valley Shopping Center (upper-class walking around)

  • A room that we can have a jewelry box in. (for close-up shot of jewelry box, and shot of upper-class putting on necklace/spraying perfume)

  • Skate park? Or a big empty area where we can have some shots of skateboarding. (garages near Katie's house?)

  • Train Station (for train shots)

  • For walking down stairs shot could be at a Train station or in a house.

So far we have roughly 8 different locations to shoot at.

Costumes Research

The costumes used for our music video for Royals will differ between the higher class and lower class.

The lower class would be wearing 'cheap' clothing i.e. hoodies, jeans/tracksuit bottoms, trainers. Just general casual wear of today's society.

The higher class would be wearing perhaps more expensive clothing and jewelry i.e dresses, maybe jeans/trousers, nice tops, necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. Again, casual clothing but of a higher standard to suggest that the higher class care more about their appearance.

Group discussions

As you may have noticed there has not been many posts on our blog for a while. This is because we have been doing a lot of group discussions off the computer. We have been discussing locations, props and have been using our script to do our storyboard which is almost completed.
There will be some new blog posts appearing very soon!
